Older Adult Dating Challenge!
The thought of dating is downright scary not matter how old you are! The thought of dating near Valentine’s Day is even worse. Starting around the last week of January, you start to see the heart shaped boxes of chocolates, the red roses and the corny cards.
Dating for older adults can be even harder. Several obstacles occur when dating over the age of 60 including:
Older adult women may feel even more overwhelmed by the holiday. Women who are over the age of 60 may have an especially hard time meeting a new companion. Between the age of 60 and 64, there are 2.3 single women to every single man. Hold on it only gets worse.
By the age of 70, the ratio of single women to single men is 4:1. Due to being a culture based on youth, older adult single women feel that the reason there are so little single older adult men is that they are dating much younger women. When you feel like the odds are against you, February 14 may not be your favorite day of the year.
It may have been several decades since your last date. The dating scene has changed drastically over the years, which can cause stress and confusion for many older adults. Soda fountains and sock hops have now been replaced with coffee shops and dance clubs. Your first date should be a place you both feel comfortable and are able to have light conversation. Opt for a place with plenty of natural light and not too much noise.
If this is your first partner since your spouse has passed away, make sure to stay clear of comparing them to your previous loved one. This is a completely different person since your late spouse. Be open and listen to their experiences, the companionship they provide is golden.
Helping Seniors Meet Seniors
Meeting older adult singles can be very overwhelming. There are very few places where people can meet with the intentions of dating. There is always online dating but if you are unfamiliar with technology that may be close to impossible.
Kane Senior Council does offer Senior Dance Parties twice a year, which allows older adults to gather from all around the Chicagoland area. This is not an older adult singles event but there is always the chance you get end up getting a date.
